This issue can be caused by the inlet cam VVT gear breaking the locking pin inside the gear as per photos listed below. This issue on late model Evoque can be a cause for incorrect valve or possible codes p0016 and p0017.

The cure to this issue is to replace timing chain kit and installing new inlet VVT cam gear. We also recommend exhaust cam VVT gear be replaced at the same time, but we are yet to see one fail. On side not both cam gear bolts as well as the crank bolt must be replaced during this process.

This problem does not only occur is the Evoque model it can also appear in models such as land rover discover sports 2015 onwards as well as the Freelander model with the 2-litre petrol variant of engine.
